Drinking From the Manischewitz Kool-Aid

Just saw an interesting episode of House tonight.
A Chasidic woman, who was a recent Ba'alas Teshuva, is admitted to the hospital where House works after collapsing at her wedding. (She fell out of her chair during the dance at the wedding.) The episode had the typical plot we've come to expect from the show (mystery illness, has a few theories that don't pan out, patient starts collapsing at key moments, they think she's going to die, then House figures it out in the end, and all is OK).
It could be the first time on a network TV show where the first parts of Eishes Chayil were actually sung in the "traditional" tune.

  • I've never watched HOUSE but happened to tune in that night to it. My husband stopped flicking the remote as soon as we heard the opening scene's music.
It was a bizarro storyline, to say the least, and I thought it might infuriate some folks; I felt a bit uneasy watching it (and I'm modern Orthodox) because of the crass comments House was making...but then again, he's known for that.
Parts of the story were accurate, others were farcical...but isn't that always the case when frum Jews are portrayed on television and movies?

  • Yes, if you have watched House a bit you'll know that he manages to say something offensive about anything and everything. Thus, viewing the episode within that context did not make it nearly so bad when he started saying things.
I think that all in all they did a decent job of it, especially if you compare it to other times in network TV when the "Orthodox Jew" is a bare caricature.

(I seem to recall reading about a Grey's Anatomy episode [never watch that show] where a girl refused a heart value from a pig because it wasn't kosher. I think the House episode managed to largely avoid such stupidities.)
